Khadija Gbla is passionate about and dedicated to building up and promoting the advancement of a more inclusive, culturally aware and accepting society. She is committed to giving back and serving her community.

Khadija is the Founder of The Desert Flower Centre Australia. The Desert Flower Australia is the first centre in Australia and the Asian pacific region that specialises in providing holistic, comprehensive gynaecological and urological reconstructive surgery and trauma informed care for women impacted by female genital mutilation. The centre also provides training for professionals, advocacy for individuals impacted and at risk of FGM and community education for practicing communities in Australia.  

 

Khadija is an Ambassador for Our Watch. Our Watch is a national leader in the primary prevention of violence against women and their children in Australia. Our Watch works to embed gender equality and prevent violence where Australians live, learn, work and socialise.

 

Khadija is also an Ambassador and Board member for SisterWorks, a not-for-profit social enterprise which supports refugee and migrant women to become economically empowered through the model of learning by doing.  Through work and entrepreneurship, SisterWorks support women who are refugees, asylum seekers or migrants to improve their confidence, mental wellbeing and sense of belonging.  

 

Khadija is a member of the Adelaide United Football Advisory Board. Adelaide United Football Club is a professional soccer club based in Adelaide, South Australia. The club participates in the A-League under licence from Football Federation Australia. The aim of the board will be an integral part of plans to professionalise the club, to bring it closer to the South Australian community. We will do this by developing stronger national and international business networks, working with governments at all levels, doing more to involve women and girls in the club, and deepening our footprint across multicultural groups. 

 

Khadija is also a member of the Adelaide Primary Health Network Community Advisory Council. CACs are groups of community members with lived experience of the primary health care sector and PHN priority areas. CAC members tell Adelaide PHN what is most important to primary health system users and contribute to the design and development of person-centred care. CACs play a key role in the development of annual Needs Assessments and strategic plans, and support the development of strategies to improve the operation and patient experience of the primary health care system. 

 

Khadija holds a position on the Advertising Standards Community Panel. The Ad Standards organisation manages the complaint resolution process of the advertising self-regulation system. The centre piece of the self-regulation system is the composition, dedication and independence of the Ad Standards Community Panel. The Community Panel includes people from a broad range of age groups and backgrounds and is gender balanced – representative of the diversity of Australian society. The Community Panel discharges its responsibilities with fairness, impartiality and with a keen sense of prevailing community values in its broadest sense.
